Veterans at the Athens Homebrewers Club will tell you there are about 30 different kinds of beer.
But they're not quite sure just what category John Hinson and Devon Williams' creation falls into.
Hinson and Williams brewed a pale ale with basil, pine nuts, peppercorn and garlic. They serve it in cups that are brushed in garlic and parmesan cheese. It's like drinking a slice of pizza.
"It's a pesto pale ale," Hinson said. "It's an extraordinary brew."
The duo might be a little over the top - although their brew pleased those who had the nerve to try it - but they are right at home in the homebrew club. The group that meets monthly at Terrapin Brewery is a bunch of risk-takers and nonconformists. They think they can make better beer than you can buy at the store.
There are college students and active retirees, folks in business casual and others wearing bandanas and cut-off jean shorts. But they all come together to talk and taste beer.
"You come in here and learn and talk to people and get ideas," said Pam Barker, whose husband, Bruce, started the club last year.
The Barkers started brewing their own beer back in the '70s before life happened, as Pam puts it.
She got Bruce a starter kit a few years ago, and they got right back into it.
Tim Curlee is an admitted novice. He showed off his first batch, a simple and clean wheat arrangement, at the meeting last month. He already wants to move beyond his simple kitchen setup to something more advanced.
"It's a great hobby, and I love beer," Curlee said. "It's fun to make your own. The independence of it, it's a very American thing."
